This time of year is known as the Season of Giving. We share gifts with family, friends and loved ones, while many go without. CGMS Gallery will be doing what we can to give the gift of ART this holiday season. Beginning Dec 16th, we ask you to join us in gathering art supplies for the Lake Worth Pubic School System. Markers, crayons, paper, paints, brushes, whatever you can afford, will be distributed to local schools in support of arts instruction and education. With the economic crisis affecting our country, arts education is often the first to go when school budget cuts are implemented. We want to make sure every child has the opportunity to explore creative expression and hope you will join us! Bring your supply donation to the Gallery on the 16th through the 30th, and enjoy a glass of wine and some holiday cheer. Black Friday and Small Business Saturday

This week is one of the busiest on the Calendar. Family and friends gather for Thanksgiving, and we all pause to appreciate the wonderful people in our lives. We are also conditioned to shop like maniacs on the Friday after Thanksgiving. "Black Friday"....an epic marketing ploy that is astonishingly successful--and stressful.

Well, we at the Gallery have a gentle suggestion for you. Instead of waking up ridiculously early this Friday, we ask that you sleep in. Enjoy breakfast with your family and friends, then take a leisurely drive to stroll the Avenue in Lake Worth. Downtown businesses and restaurants are waiting to tempt you with hand made art, unique one-of-a-kind gifts, delicious foods, music, and live art demonstrations.

Consider supporting local businesses and individuals this season. Give a gift that was created just for you, not in some foreign country. There are so many reasons to shop locally this holiday season, skipping the malls and "big box" stores. Handmade art is an especially wonderful gift to give, and Gallery artist Norm Gitzen put it best, offering this insight, "When you buy a gift for a loved one from a local artist you are gifting two people at the same time!"

Supporting local art and artists has such a great impact on the arts community from the artists standpoint, as well as the galleries and shops offering locally made art. That is why we are encouraging all our friends and supporters to "Shop Small" this holiday season! This movement has become quite strong and Saturday, November 26th has been designated Small Business Saturday, dedicated to supporting small businesses on one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year.

Can you believe it's already mid-November? Wow, the year is flying by. This is the time of year to reflect on what we are thankful for and to share gifts from the heart. So sorry, folks...the blog posts have been so delayed! It's been a busy few months at the Gallery and I have been hard pressed to find all the time I need to keep all the events online. For up to the minute news, events and photos, be sure to check in with CGMS on Facebook (Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery) and Twitter (cgmsg). Thanks for your patience!

Whew, we've had some fantastic events in October. First, Norm Gitzen showed us how he creates his amazing metal works in "Forging Ahead" on October 7th, then Mary Catello and Teri Salomoni transformed the Gallery into a spooky wonderland for "All Hail All Hallow's Eve" on Oct 21st. Lake Worth was filled with ghouls, goblins and ghosts for Halloween weekend, in spite of the rainy, soggy weather!

This Friday, November 7th, we invite guests to join us to get "down and dirty" with Tracy Rosof-Petersen and John McCoy. Both will be behind potter's wheels in the front of the Gallery, domonstrating the ancient art of throwing pots. So, come get Behind the Wheel and sling some mud! This will be a wonderful opportunity to work with these award-winning artists, so don't be shy!

Oh, What a Night!

Last Friday's show, Contrasts - Studies in Black and White, was spectacular! Thanks to all that joined us, and for those who missed, well, you'll have to live vicariously through the photos! Special thanks to guest artist Georgette Pressler of Devious Body Art, who transformed Gallery artist Maria Hayden's black and white sculptural figure to LIFE, painting a model in the Gallery. The finished work was simply stunning. Thanks also to Too Jay's Gourmet Deli for their generous donation of delicious black and white cookies.

Gallery artists Karen McGovern, Maria Hayden, Tracy Rosof-Petersen and Kathleen Kirschner transformed the Gallery into a black and white haven, full of beautiful art and furnishings. The show will run until Thursday, October 6th, so stop by if you have the chance.

In the meantime, enjoy this slide show of photos, and please stay tuned for news of our upcoming events. The next show is Friday, October 7. All I'll say now is that it's going to be HOT!!

Summer has FLOWN by, and now we prepare for Fall. It may not feel it, but the season's are about to change! The Gallery calendar is really heating up, even as the temps will be cooling off. Next on the agenda is "Contrasts - Studies in Black and White". Simply put, you don't want to miss this show! We invite all guests to come dressed in your very best black and white outfits and accessories. The more outrageous the better.

Award winning artistGeorgette Pressler of Devious Body Art will be joining us, painting a model live. She is transforming her model into a living sculpture--patterned after Maria Hayden's amazing black and white torso sculpture that will be on display. A great opportunity to see why body art is one of the most explosive and popular arts events! Gallery artist Karen McGovern is hosting the event, and has created a series of mixed media jewelry in black and white for the show. Other Gallery artists creating works specific to this show include Mary Catello and Teri Salomoni, Norman Gitzen, Betty Wilson, Madeline Gallo and Linda Manganaro. The Gallery will be filled with amazing works in all mediums, all in black or white.

So, come out on Friday, September 16th at 6:00 PM for a wonderful live art event! AND, some good treats as well. TooJays Gourmet Deli of Lake Worth will be helping out with their delicious black and white cookies. We'll have some yummy cheeses and wines to sip as well. See you next Friday at 6:00....

The Gallery is getting ready to give art a voice, a LOUD voice! On Friday, September 2, CGMS Gallery will be celebrating Labor Day with an old-fashioned protest party complete with local labor leaders giving "soap box" speeches and a Woody Guthrie sing-along with Gallery artist and musician Rick Cohen. Gallery Director (and all-around activist) Joyce Brown will be hosting this event, and has created one-of-a-kind sculptures specifically for this event. The Raging Grannies will also join us to lend their voices and songs to our political and social commentary.

Strong Sun Moon

The first full moon of the Summer Solstice is called the Strong Sun Moon, and we will be celebrating this in the Gallery on July 15th. The 4th of July weekend is nearly upon us! Here's a bit of advice...spend your weekend celebrating our nation's independence in LAKE WORTH! This weekend promises to be a fantastic, fun-filled few days for you, your family and friends. Lake Worth is throwing a good, old-fashioned party including music, a pie eating contest, pig kissing (you heard me...) and so much more Downtown Lake Worth will be exploding with activity during the entire Fourth of July Weekend. On July 3rd, the Downtown Cultural Alliance Merchant Association will be taking over the Lake Avenue sidewalks and side streets “J”, “K”, “L” and “M” for a full day of old fashioned family fun. Restaurants and Merchants are offering patriotic sidewalk sales all day. The festivities will take place Sunday from 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

Restaurants on Lake and Lucerne will move their grills to the sidewalk, roasting ears of corn and barbequing hotdogs, hamburgers, chicken and other holiday treats. Local food vendors will also line the streets with Italian-ice, ice cream, boiled peanuts, baked goods and watermelon.

And did I mention the Beach Blanket Bingo??? Wear a swimsuit July 3rd and get free raffle tickets for some great prizes!

Hey Dad, Come See the New Gals!

June 3 was for the New Guys, and this Friday, June 17th is for the New Gals! Come meet our new Gallery members Kathleen Kirschner, Mary Catello, Teri Salomoni, Madeline Gallo and Lee Mortensen. Kathleen, Mary and Teri all work with wood and fiber, creating amazing vessels and 3-dimensional sculptures. Madeline is a sculptor and potter, and Lee works with stained glass and creates intricate mosaics. All will be on hand to meet you and show you their latest creations.

This Friday will also be a great opportunity to find the perfect Father's Day gift! Believe us when we say that Dad doesn't need another tie this Father's Day (seriously). Instead, give him the gift of original art. We have sports related sculptures from basketball to sumo wrestling, hand made coffee mugs, glass platters, and hand forged men's jewelry in bronze and copper. Each piece unique and original, just like DAD!

We are welcoming several new artists to the Gallery, and have divided the group into two shows--The Guys, and The Gals! Join us this Friday to meet the New Guys, Rick Cohen and Mark Banfield. Both are woodworkers, Rick creates amazing functional and decorative works with driftwoods and found objects. Mark is a wood turner, creating beautifully detailed bowls and vessels from local and exotic wood.

All these fantastic sculptors and potters have been featured in Lark Publication's new book, 500 Raku. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet the artsts responsible for the stunnig works pictured in the book, and you can get your very own signed copy as well!

Happy Birthday to US!

We celebrated our second birthday on the Avenue last Friday with delicious cake, mimosas, home made sangria and a fantastic butterfly release. The butteflies were provided by Wish Upon A Butterfly, and we had a great time watching the lovely insects emerge from their envelopes to fly away over the gallery. If you have never been a part of a butterfly release, you should! It is a lovely way to celebrate any occasion, and such a great, interactive event. Look up Wish Upon a Butterfly, and tell Jodi we sent you! We released native butterflies including painted ladies, black swallowtails, and everyone's favorite, monarch butterflies! As you can see from the photos below, this is an event made for kids and photographers. We will continue this tradition annually, and if you missed it this year, be sure to mark your calendars for next May.

Creating a Mermaid....From Cans!

Never let it be said that the Gallery is ever idle...To celebrate the Grand Opening of Lake Worth's brand new Publix Supermarket, Gallery artist Mary Ellen Dohrs was recruited to create a giant mermaid in the front of the Gallery made entirely of canned goods from Publix! Mary Ellen is an extraordinary sculptor and artist, and also an engineer, perfect for the job. Beginning on Monday, Gallery artists gathered to construct the mermaid under Mary Ellen's direction. The finished result is amazing! Be sure to stop by the Gallery to see her in all her canned wonder.

Peeps A Plenty!

When we asked our Gallery artists to create 3-D art using marshmallow Peeps, we expected some fun, silly works. What we got is simply extraordinary! The slideshow below features photographs taken by Durga Garcia of the Peeps Show exhibit currently being shown in the Gallery. You simply must stop by to see this in person! Peeps at the beach, Peeps dancing, Peeps on Safari, Sgt. Peepers Lonely Heart's Club Band, and so much more! Come by tonight for lemonade and Peeps, bring your kids, and have a good giggle. The show will be up until Sunday, April 24.

Empty Bowls Raise Big Bucks!

On Saturday, April 9, the streets of Lake Worth swarmed with 200 hungry donors, all participants in this year’s Haitian Empty Bowl Fundraiser. The funds raised were for the Art Creation Foundation for Children in Jacmel Haiti. On Monday, April 18, at a check signing ceremony at Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery of Downtown Lake Worth, a check for $3200 was turned over to Judy Hoffman, representative of the foundation. Also present at the ceremony were Mayor Rene Varela, Gail Pasternack, and Joyce Brown who presented the check to the foundation. Photographer Durga Garcia recorded the event.

On April 9, over 200 visitors stopped into the Clay Glass Metal Stone, picked up hand made bowls donated by dozens of Palm Beach County artists, and began a feeding frenzy throughout the downtown Lake Worth restaurant district. Visitors began lining up for their bowls at 8:00 AM. The event began at 10AM. Favorite bowls of all shapes and sizes were chosen. From 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM hundreds of folks criss-crossed the streets over-stuffing themselves with some of the most delicious foods Palm Beach County has to offer. The three participating Pizza restaurants, Rotelli’s, Downtown Pizza and My Spot Pizza on Federal Highway evoked mass discussion on which was the best Pizza in town. La Bonne Bouche served large portions of potent Rum Cake while next door the Cottage set up a buffet with a variety of salads and pasta. Over on Lake Avenue folks zigzagged down the corridor from Fionentio’s to Dave’s Last Resort to Brogue’s Irish Bar feasting on spicy sausage and pasta dishes, corn and shrimp chowder and Italian specialties. After a break to allow the food to settle they progressed on to Dolce Vita where wine samplings and chocolate were the order of the day and the Rum Shack for a pasta offering. On to the Java Juice Bar and Nature’s Way Café for smoothies. Heading East they stopped at Paws on the Avenue to pick up treats for their cats and dogs. Kilwin’s offered delicious ice cream and chocolate treats, Too Jays, cookies and Rita’s, Italian Ice, a refreshing cold treat on a hot day. Across the street in the Cultural Plaza the Taco Lady filled the bowls with a variety of Tex-Mex goodies.

Potters and Clay artists throughout Palm Beach County contributed over 300 bowls to the event. Gail Pasternack topped the list creating over sixty bowls. In addition, thirty of her closest friends participated in the event. Tracy Rosof-Petersen and John McCoy made thirty bowls each for the fundraiser and members of the Palm Beach Ceramic League collectively brought in over fifty.

Representing the city of Lake Worth, Mayor Rene Varela joined the celebration as the funds raised were turned over to Judy Hoffman, representative of the Art Creation Foundation for the children of Jacmel Haiti. The children range in age from six to sixteen years and are the subject of a Nick News documentary with Linda Ellerbee, "Haiti Rising? Life in the Ruins. What's it like to be a kid in Haiti, a year after a devastating earthquake? ” The children are learning to become self-sustaining and to live cooperatively within their community through their participation in the creation of art.

Wonderful Celebration of our EARTH!

Thanks to all that attended this past Friday's "Earth/Bowl ~ Sky/Basket" Gallery opening. It was a lovely evening, with representatives from Palm Beach County Reef Rescue, and guest pianist Nino DiSilva. We had a great time!

Now, get ready for a really FUN event next weekend. With Easter right around the corner, we decided to host a "Peeps Show" Friday, April 22 through Sunday, April 24. Gallery artists, and other local artists, have created 3-dimensional works of art using marshmallow Peeps! The works will be displayed in the front of the Gallery, including a special Peeps presentation with Norm Gitzen's famous "Siren" mermaid sculpture outside. Please stop by over the weekend to marvel at these silly, creative creations! Oh, and we will be serving the iconic marshmallow candy as well...Prepare to PEEP!

Spirit of the Earth!

First, thanks so much to all of you that came out for Saturday's Empty Bowl Fundraiser for Haiti. The bowls were lovely, and the food delicious! A round of applause for all the Lake Worth restaurants that generously donated scrumptious treats...you guys rock! While we're at it, thanks to the artists that donated the hand-made bowls. Every year these bowls are donated FOR FREE to the Gallery, each made by a local artist. Gorgeous works by generous artists...

Also, a HUGE thank you to Gallery Director, Joyce Brown, for her tireless efforts to coordinate this event. Joyce is the driving force behind CGMSG, and we could not continue without her. THANKS JOYCE!!!!

Now, on to the next event. This Friday, April 15th, we will be celebrating our planet with "Earth/Bowl ~ Sky/Basket". This is a Native American title, refering to the Earth as a bowl and the sky as a basket. Gallery aritst Tracy Rosof-Petersen is spearheading this event, and her Native American-inspired pottery will be on display, along with other nature-inspired works from Gallery artists. We will also be welcoming representatives from Palm Beach County Reef Rescue, a great organization dedicated to preserving our fragile ocean reefs. Musical guest Nino DeSilva will be performing, so please come support our Mother Earth! See you at 6:00...

This Saturday, April 9th, will be the second annual Empty Bowl Fundraiser for Haiti! Come to the Gallery and purchase hand-made bowls, then wander Lake Worth sampling delicious foods offered by participating restaurants. This year's event promises to be even more delicious than last year! All the bowls are created by local artits and donated to the Gallery. The bowls are $25.00 each if purchased before April 9, $30.00 each the day of the event. All sales proceeds will be benefit the children of Jacmel, Haiti through the Art Creation Foundation for Children.

On Monday evening, March 28, Mel Healy and Vinnie Cerniglia of Spittoon Studios bring a screening of Broad Old River 2 to the Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery! The screening features the Hudson River Sloop Singers; Pete Seeger and his friends. The screening will begin at 7 PM followed by the singing of several of the Sloop Singers.

Pete Seeger, Folk Singer and long time activist for peace and social justice, took a look at his own back yard, noticed how polluted the Hudson River had become and decided to do something about it. He helped bring the sloop the Clearwater to the Hudson and sailing up and down the river with crews of singers and environmental activists brought about changes in communities along the banks of the Hudson that led to waters that now run clear. The fleet grew to three sloops as the Woody Guthrie and the SoJourner Truth were added. Mel Healy became the captain of the Sojourner. She now resides in Lake Worth Florida singing with her husband Vinnie Cerniglia at open mikes and spreading the word and the work of the Clearwater.

Back in November 2009, states Healy, “we were able to gather a whole batch of old Clearwater friends to do a concert together and do some interviews about the Sloop Clearwater and The Hudson River Sloop Singers. We were lucky that so many old friends came to join in the fun. Months later after lots of editing and with the combined energy of Koza Productions, Spittoon Studios & LCA TV - VCAM we put together a half hour video featuring Pete Seeger and friends.

The concert celebrates the release of the Broad Old River 2 CD. Four decades of sloop singers and family came together in Pete’s 90th year at the Clearwater Beacon sloop club to sing the songs together again. The video tells how a group of people can come together and make a dream come to life. Screening will be followed by music. CDs will be available for purchase. $15 from each CD sold benefits maintenance and restoration on the sloops Woody Guthrie and Clearwater.

Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, Inc. is a 501(c)3 tax exempt nonprofit, member-supported corporation whose mission is to preserve and protect the Hudson River. In 1966, folk music legend and environmental activist Pete Seeger, in despair over the pollution of his beloved Hudson River, announced plans to “build a boat to save the river”. At the time, the Hudson was rank with raw sewage, toxic chemicals and oil pollution; fish had disappeared over many miles of its length. Seeger believed a majestic replica of the sloops that sailed the Hudson in the 18th and 19th centuries would bring people to the river, where they could experience its beauty and be moved to preserve it. Inspired by that vision, the 106-feet-long tall ship Clearwater was built and launched in 1969. The sloop was among the first vessels in the U.S. to conduct science-based environmental education aboard a sailing ship, virtually creating the template by which such programs are conducted around the world today.

Mel and Vinnie are Spittoon Studios. Vincent Cerniglia plays old school blues guitar. Maryellen Healy sings from the heart. Together they sail, fundraise, compose, organize, educate and archive for Clearwater spreading a message you can sing and dance to.

Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery will host this eventm free to the public. CDs of Broad Old River 2 will be available for sale. 100% of the proceeds will go to the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater.

Spring is almost here! This Friday, we will celebrate the changing of the season with Art in BLOOM - Visions of Paradise. The Galler will be filled with art representing Spring, and the amazing paradise of South Florida. Norm Gitzen's metal sculpted dolphin and Siren will be there, along with tropical creations in clay by Tracy Rosof-Petersen and Maria Hayden. We also will be welcoming new artists Rick Cohen and Kathleen Krischner, who create lovely work using natural elements such as wood, twigs and bark. Their creations reflect the beauty of nature, and are simply amazing!

So, stop by to meet the "newbies" and have a glass of wine to toast the arrival of SPRING!!

Let's Get DIRTY!

You have to come to the Gallery on February 18th for our first annual "Pottery Throw-Down!". We will have three pottery wheels set up in front of the Gallery, and our talented potters will compete to see who can throw the most bowls, create the biggest and the tallest bowls, and generally throw some mud around! We invite our guests to take a spin at the wheel--just be sure to wear something you don't mind getting dirty! If you've never worked clay on a wheel, this is the perfect opportunity to give it a try. If you are a potter, come show your stuff and enter the competition!

Finished bowls will be fired and offered for sale during our Empty Bowl Project to raise funds for Haitian relief efforts.

Discovering Your MUSE...

Do you have a collection of old buttons, beads, scraps of fabric? How about old photos or magazine images? We all have an odd drawer or box filled with "treasure" we don't quite know what to do with. Well, this Friday, Feb 4, is for you! Come to the Gallery at 6:00 for The MUSE in YOU - Discovering Inspiration. Gallery artists Marsha Christo, Amelia Costa and Lorraine Bowe invite you to join them in the creation of a group mixed media wall project that will incorporate found objects galore! The finished wall hanging will be sold and the proceeds will be donated to local charities.

This will be a fun night, and offers the chance not only to express yourself, but to work with three talented fabric, mixed media and jewelry designers. I can't wait to see the finished work!

Since the beginning of time, man has adorned himself in some way or another. From tatoos to haute couture, the human body has been a living stage for personal expression. Perhaps one of the most ancient forms of adornment is jewelry. Jewelry has been a part of human culture and history for...well...ever. Some of the first archeological discoveries were of beads. Traded, collected and used as currency, beads and jewelry are ancient and ever-evolving examples of human artistic experssion.

This Friday, the Gallery is proud to present a one-night show with Italian jewelry designer Donatella Linari. Donatella has traveled the globe in search of antiquities and beads for her singular designs. From the Amazon to Egypt she has collected an amazing array of ancient talismans, beads and bits of history she transforms into stunning jewelry. Her works are shown around the world!

It was HOT at the Gallery Last Night!!

Last night was simply amazing at the Gallery. We had a huge crowd of guests, and Gallery artist Yure Alencar lit up the night with a live foundry pour in front of the Gallery. Yure brought what is basically a portable volcano to melt bronze--it was fantastic! He then did a live splatter pour to create some unbelievable free-form shapes in molten bronze, right on the sidewalk! Can't wait to see the finished, polished product. Check out the slide show below--pictures really don't do justice to the event! The finished bronze works will be in the Gallery soon...come see!

What a great night! Thanks to all that joined us for our "unusual" art show--we had so much fun! First, thanks to Gallery artist Betty Wilson for the amazing spread of delicous treats. We ate like Kings and Queens! Special guests Georgette Pressler of Devious Body Art and Ryan David of Kiss My Glass really stole the show last night. Georgette painted a guest model, transforming him into our Ring Master for the night. Ryan worked hot glass out front, drawing quite a crowd as he melted and formed glass in a torch. Thank you Georgette and Ryan!

We had a great crowd, all enjoying the art and artists on display. A great night on the Avenue! More events on the way, so keep tuned and don't miss a thing!!

This Friday will be a very unusual and amazing night at the Gallery. "Theatre of the Absurd - Beauty in Uncommon Forms" is all about alternative, mixed media, and "steampunk" art. The works of Gallery artists Linda and Kelly Dean Manganaro, Betty Wilson, Amelia Costa, Victoria Rose Martin and Karen McGovern will be featured. These artists create truly unique art from found objects, mixed metals, clay and glass. Three dimensional creations of truly uncommon beauty. Victoria is known for her whimsical and sometimes dark ceramic figures, often in costume. Karen creates dramatic jewelry, often using antique elements such as German doll bodies and optic lenses. Her pieces are narrative, and many come with an original short story inspired by elements in the design. Linda and her Husband Kelly create unbelievable furniture, installations and figures from all manner of material, antiquities and found objects. Betty is well known for her abstract glass creations, and amazing interpretive sculptures. Amelia blends text with clay to create scenes, figures and scenarios filled with meaning.

Special guest artist Georgette Pressler of Devious Body Art will use the human form as canvas, painting live in the Gallery. Her work is simply stunning. David Ryan of Kiss My Glass joins us out front, working with glass in flame to create all manner of amazing designs.

Thanks to all that joined us last night for "Rage - Freedom of Expression". The Gallery was full, the art was amazing and the front of the Gallery was really spectacular. Gallery artists Joe Dwzill, Betty Wilson, and Joyce Brown created an amazing installation representing the BP oil disaster in the Gulf. An oil derrik featuring blood soaked dollar signs pumped oil over a destroyed beach. Turtle eggs lay broken in the sand, with hands reaching in supplication toward the sky. Gallery artist Norm Gitzen's famous "Siren" stood blindfolded and bound, helpless. New Gallery artist Yure posed an amazing bronze dinosaur over the scene, representing fossil fuels. A gripping and truly expressive installation!

The "Raging Grannies" also joined us, lending their voice in song to our concerns about the environment. What a great group of motivated, outspoken women! More photos to come soon....

We'll pull out our fall leave decor, drench the Gallery in the colors of Autumn and eagerly anticipate the shorter, cooler days. This event is brought to you by Gallery artists Norman Gitzen, Sheri Goldstein and Edith Perla-Smith. Sheri will be demonstrating how she creates her beautiful fused glass art, and the food table will be filled with artisan cheeses, fresh apples and delicious wines of the season. Dog DaZe - What Fun!

Friday was so great in the Gallery! We dedicated the evening to all things canine, and we had a blast. We partnered with Elite Greyhound Adoptions and Paws on the Avenue. Elite brought four greyhounds to mingle with guests and Paws provided treats for visiting dogs, great outfits for our two four-legged models, and dog bowls for our table of human treats! Gallery artist Karen McGovern created hand-stamped dog tags on the spot, donating all proceeds to Elite. As you can see, the Gallery really did "go to the dogs!"

"Figuratively Speaking" was a fantastic success! Thanks to all who joined us last night, especially guest artists Claudia Jane Klein and Georgette Pressler. Claudia debuted her sculpture, the Wheel, which will reside outside the Gallery for the next 90 days as part of our new "Revolving Art" program. Georgette, of Devious Body Art, created an amazing work of living art by body painting a goregous model. Really spectacular!

Gallery artist Marsha Christo created hand-cut prints she applied live to anyone wearing light colored clothing who wanted an instant work of oringinal, wearable art. Many guests enjoyed not only the finished print, but the free hug that came with the process!

Revolving Art - The Wheel

Next time you visit the Gallery you will notice a big change out front. Our usual greeter, Norm Gitzen's "Siren", has retired to the interior of the Gallery and a new, amazing sculpture has taken her place. Claudia Jane Klein is an extremely talented welder, artist and all around metal magician. Her sculpture is a surreal take on a classic yoga pose (fits well with our neighbors, Soma Studio). The sculpture is just gorgeous and is the start of what we are calling a "Revolving Art" exhibit in front of the Gallery. We are inviting artists from all around the area to exhibit large works in front of the Gallery on a rotating basis. Each piece will be on display for 60-90 days. We encourage any interested artists to contact us and submit photos of their work for consideration.

Whew! This Friday, July 16th, is going to be AMAZING in the Gallery. Summer is here, the days are long and the sun is HOT. So is our summer Gallery events calendar! There are so many events on the horizon--4th of July right around the corner and we're planning our own "Fire Works" live in the Gallery on the 2nd. Then it's on to a celebration of human form with live body painting on the 18th. Before you know it August will be here with a huge music event hitting the streets of Lake Worth. The Gallery will be rocking right along!

This past Friday was a trip to the beach at the Gallery. We celebrated "Summer Daze" with sand casting, beach balls and a beach picnic theme in the Gallery. This event was hosted by Gallery artists Jesse Showalter, Marsha Christo, Linda and Kelly Dean Manganaro, and Lois Herrick. Sun, fun, sand and ART!!

Give Peace a Chance...

This Friday will be very special at the Gallery. Five of our talented artists have joined forces to bring you an artistic celebration of PEACE. Gail and Howard Silverblatt, of amazing cloissone jewelry fame, will present a large Peace topiary in the front window, along with several new jewelry designs reflecting this theme. Potter Tracy Rosof-Peterson is known for her Peace designs, on mugs, vessels, plaques and more. Sheri Goldstien melts glass into amazing shapes of all colors and designs, often incorporating sprials and other peaceful images. Finally, Marica DiSylvester creates stunning teapots and vessels using natural elements and designs. The group will transform the Gallery into an artful celebration of PEACE, something we all need to support around the world.

Winged Wonder!

This past Friday was an extra-special day at the Gallery. Not only were we celebrating Mother's Day, we also celebrated the Gallery's one year anniversary on Lake Ave. The celebration was made even more special by the release of several dozen monarch butterflies, courtesy of Mr. Butterflies. What a spectacular event! Take a look at the photos below and you will see the amazing effect the release had on those participating.

The Mayor of Lake Worth, Rene Varela, joined us for the release, as well as the many other friends and supporters. The wonderful photos were taken by Durga Garcia.

Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery is filled with an endless variety of unique art, and unique artists. You may know Gael and Howard Silverblatt for their wonderful cloisonne jewelry, but did you also know that Gael is also in charge of the Lake Worth Tree Board's annual tree giveaway?

The 3rd Annual Shade Tree Give-Away is coming back to Lake Worth on Saturday, May 1st from 8:30 a.m. till noon at the Lake Worth City Hall parking lot located at 7 North Dixie Highway.

The Tree Board will be giving away 400 Native trees to residents living within the city limits with zip codes of 33460 and 33461. One per household with proof of residency required (like a current utility bill or a driver’s license). Those residents who rent property will have to show a note of approval from their landlords to receive a free tree. There may be help available to transport and plant the trees if needed.

The mostly native trees are 5-6 feet tall when planted. There are 16 different types of trees including Gumbo Limbo, Live Oak, Buttonwood, Mahogany, Lancewood, Stoppers, Sea Grape and Paradise Trees.

The City Commission set a goal to plant 10,000 trees by 2013 the 100th Year Anniversary of the program. Since setting this goal, the City Tree Board has given away 2000 trees.

The Tree Canopy Restoration Fund provides the funding for the trees, which is used for the planting of the tree canopy coverage in Lake Worth. The trees were purchased from Ameliascapes Garden Center, a new business opening in August at 1515 North Dixie Highway in Lake Worth.

So, be sure to get your tree this weekend (say hello to Gael!) and do the planet a big favor by planting and re-greening Lake Worth!

Hard to believe that April is almost over! Summer is almost here, and we are busy as usual at the Gallery. We are saying goodbye for a bit to several of our artists who spend the summer "Up North", including Gael Pasternack, Theo Sable, and Mary Ellen Dohrs. We wish them safe travels, a great summer and can't wait to see them in the Fall!

We are in the midst of Summer planning, and have some great events on schedule. May 7th is a special event for us as we celebrate both Mother's Day and our Gallery Anniversary! Every Day is Earth Day!

Thanks to all our friends and supporters that came out this past Friday night in celebration of Earth Day. The Gallery was dressed for the occasion with Spanish moss, bromeliads and stands of papyrus. Joanne Davis from 1000 Friends of Florida was on hand with tons of information about this amazing environmental group, as well as Peter Robinson representing the Oceanside Green Market. The cookies from Christie's Bakery in Wellington were FANTASTIC! We offerd local foods including organic breads, local honey and edible flowers from Swank Produce--beautiful and delicious! The Lake Worth Tree Board offered free cardboard palm seedlings to our guests, and the Gallery supplied bags of wildlflower seeds to take home as well. We know how to trow a party!

Everyone had a great time enjoying the presentations, both edible and artistic! Be sure to check back as we prepare for our May events, including the Gallery's anniversary party. You won't want to miss that!

Celebrate Earth Day with Us!

Earth Day is this week! What better way to express your love of nature than through art? Art and Nature are linked, you can't have one without the other. This Friday, we plan to show you that link with our Celebration of Earth Day from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. The gallery will be filled with amazing art reflecting our natural world, and we have partnered with 1000 Friends of Florida, the Lake Worth Tree Board, and the Oceanside Green Market for the evening. We'll be giving way trees, wildflower seeds, and great information about how you can help preserve our natural world.

Sayonara Season Sidewalk Sale!

April usually is the month that our visiting seasonal friends from "Up North" pack up and head home for the summer. What better way to say goodbye than with a GOOD BUY??? This Friday and Saturday CGMS Gallery will host a "Sayonara Season Sidewalk Sale". Amazing art at amazing prices! This is also an opportunity for us to make room for new, fabulous designs from our group of uber-talented artists.

Marvelous Mermaid!

CGMS Gallery artist Norman Gitzen is well known for his sculptures and carvings. He's also well known for one of his most talked-about creations, the "Siren". This monolithic mermaid has been shown all over Florida and has caught the attention of millions through some very interesting press. Most recently, the "Siren" has been residing in all her glory outside our Gallery in Lake Worth. Just last week, Frank Cerebino of the Palm Beach Post wrote a great article about her and we wanted to share that here. Please take a moment to read the article and by all means leave comments! Haitian Empty Bowl Project a Huge Success!

You probaby heard about the Empty Bowl Project we participated in last month. Well, it was a HUGE success! When the earthquake hit Haiti, we knew we had to do something to help. So, Joyce Brown, CGMS Gallery Director, started the Empty Bowl project. She put out a call to artists to create and donate ceramic bowls that would be sold in the Gallery, with 100% of sales proceeds benefiting Haitian relief efforts. Several HUNDRED bowls were created and donated by fantastic artists. On March 20th, folks picked up their bowls and were treated to free food from 16 Lake Worth restaurants. What a great day! Thanks to Joyce, all the artists who created bowls and to the wonderful restaurants and vendors in Lake Worth that made this event such a great success!!

Spring Fun!

A big thanks to all that joined us this past Friday for our "Spring has Sprung" gallery event. Fresh dasies were given to all the lovely ladies in attendance and the gallery was dressed up for Spring. As you can see, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves!

Also in the news is CGMS Gallery artist Norman Gitzen. Norm participated in the first-ever art and music festival held in Royal Palm Beach this past March. Norm and art partner Lisa Wood entered the street painting competition and Norm also entered the juried art competition and won first place! Congratulations NORM!!! Norm as been an artist his whole life and since 1980 his distinctive style of decorative metal, stone and wood sculpture can be found in private collections and public displays around the world. In addition to being an accomplished sculptor, he is also an expert woodworker and known for his spectacular custom fireplace surrounds and mantles.

Can you believe it's almost April? Time is flying and it's finally SPRING! Been so busy at the Gallery. Our Haitian Relief Empty Bowl Project was an amazing success, with $5,000.00 raised on Saturday the 20th! Thanks to all who participated--the artists that donated handmade bowls, and the fantastic restaurants of Lake Worth that donated so much delicious food! Pictures coming soon...

Now, on to April, another busy month! First, Gallery artists Doreen Alfaro, Mary Ellen Dohrs, Karyl Mae Karpinos, and Theo Sable are presenting "Spring Has Sprung!" on Friday, April 2nd from 6 - 9 PM. Stop by the Gallery for a sip of wine, fresh fruits and cheeses, all to celebrate the changing of the season. The gallery will be dressed in style, with fresh flowers and new designs throughout! Don't miss this!

This coming weekend, the 19th and 20th, are going to be great days and evenings on Lake Avenue. On Friday, the 19th we invite you to visit the gallery to see the works of featured artists Gael and Howard Silverblatt and Edith Perla-Smith. Stop by for a sip of wine and meet the artists between 6:00 and 9:00 PM. Here's some information about these fantastic artists:

Nationally recognized for their technical mastery of the cloisonne technique, Gael and Howard Silverblatt are recent recipients of a State of Florida Visual Arts Fellowship Award. “We are fascinated by the challenge of cloisonne as a medium to portray the antics of minute characters in the midst of detailed backgrounds,” they revealed. Howard fabricates the miniature objects and jewelry using high karet gold and gemstones. Gael creates the unique narrative cloisonne images using fine ribbons of varying heights of gold wire to make portions of the image appear to float or recede within the layers of transparent enamel, suggesting a more three dimensional space. The repeated applications and firings of finely ground enamels create a saturated color field within a very small area.

Edith Perla-Smith grew up in Lima, Peru where she first started sculpting and drawing figures in elementary school. Later over a 15 year period her love for the arts paralleled her creativity for computer system analysis. Her artistic passion was re-embraced 10 years ago with an introduction to sculpting, drawing and ceramics. Edith emerged as a recognized sculptor displaying realistic clay and bronze works in many galleries in Palm Beach. Additionally, she uses relief-sculpted figures to complement her porcelain vessels. Her exceptional artwork is found among numerous private collections in Florida.

And don't forget, on Saturday the 20th CGMS Gallery will be your destination to purchase or pick up your hand made ceramic bowl for the Empty Bowl Project benefiting Haitian relief efforts. The Gallery will be offering bowls for $25.00 each in advance, or $35.00 on Saturday. Then stroll the Avenue and sample delicious foods from sixteen participating restaurants. This event will be held from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. All proceeds will be donated to Haiti relief efforts. What a great way to spend the weekend!!!

Mark your calendars folks, you DO NOT want to miss this event. As soon as the earthquake in Haiti hit, we knew we had to help any way we could. The Empty Bowl Project is a result of a cooperative effort between artists, individuals and businesses in the Lake Worth and surrounding areas. Please join us for this event and help us raise funds for those devestated by the recent earthquake. 100% of all sales will be donated to Haitian relief efforts. Here's the story:

Lake Worth’s Flamingo Clay Studio – Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery reacted immediately to the devastation caused by the Haitian earthquake by sending out a “Call to Artists” for handcrafted ceramic bowls to be sold at the gallery, with all funds raised going to Haitian Relief efforts. Sixteen of Lake Worth’s finest restaurant and food specialty shops will be making samples of their best foods to fill these bowls. The event will take place on Saturday, March 20 from 10 AM to 5 PM. Advance donations for this event are $25 a bowl or four bowls for $80. Donations on the day of the event will be $35 a bowl. All donations in excess of this will be gratefully appreciated.

The call to artists brought a response from all over Palm Beach County. Brian Kovachik, artist and teacher at Jupiter High School PBAU was the first to answer the call. His student is donating 100 bowls to this project. The student of Anita Smith, Royal Palm High School- Nat’l Art Honor Society will be donating 20 bowls and both Bok Middle School for the Arts and Dreyfoos High School for the arts will be pitching in as well. The Ceramic League of the Palm Beaches will be contributing over 125 bowls and the artists of the Clay Glass Metal Stone gallery have pledged over 130 bowls. A complete list of artists and their contributions will be made available in the future.

Through the generosity of the many restaurants and specialty food shops in Lake Worth, each person donating funds to Haiti will receive a bowl that they can keep, and a wonderful sampling of the delicious foods that Lake Worth has to offer. The following restaurants and shops are participating in this event: On Lucerne Avenue: (516) La Bonne Bouche. On L Street (7 N), The Taco Lady. On Lake Avenue: (400 Block) Rita’s Italian Ice and TooJay’s Gourmet Deli. (500 Block) Havana Hideout, Kilwin’s Chocolate and Ice Cream, Nature’s Way Café and Paws on the Avenue (pet treats). (600 Block) Java Juice Bar, Lake Worth Rum Shack, Downtown Pizza, Soma Café, The Pelican and Dave’s Last Resort and Raw Bar. (700 Block) Rotelli’s Pizza Pasta. (800 Block) The Cyber Café.

Throughout the event there will be Haitian Music played throughout the business district. The Cyber Café will have samplings of Haitian food.

The orphaned children of Haiti will benefit from this fundraising event. Thousands of children in Haiti are without families or homes. The despair of these children is monumental. They are in need of shelter, food and a community that will love and care for them. The City of Lake Worth has risen to the task of raising both money and supplies for this effort. In cooperation with leaders in the Haitian Community, Que Osterval, Jean Fritz Altidor and Dr. Ralph Pierre Louis; Joseph Kroll, Public Services Director of the City of Lake Worth; The Downtown Cultural Alliance and The Flamingo Clay Studio will collaborate on the maximizing of funds raised for the cash, supplies and equipment needed to best meet the needs of the children of Haiti.

MARCHing Forward

Suddenly it's March! Time is flying and there is so much to see and do on the Avenue! The street painting festival was amazing, Lake Ave was simply transformed and everyone loved it. Crowds lined the street and we thank everyone who stopped by the Gallery while downtown. We invite you to do the same this Friday, March 5th, for a special night in the Gallery with artists Jesse Showalter, Susan Bordas, Doreen Alfaro, and Marsha Christo.

Jesse Showalter’s creative clay process begins on the wheel. “I have tried many media such as wood and metals, but my true love is working with clay. Throwing is like meditation, losing a complete sense of time and finding a quiet place within” he reveals. After years of making excellent functional ware he has discovered the joy and frustrations of the Raku and Saggar firing process using sawdust, seaweed, coconut shells, and even palm fronds as new ways of creating visual interest on elegant vessels.

Doreen Alfaro’s desire to make pottery started 6 years ago as a way to enhance her long career of catering festive occasions by using her handmade plates, cups, and bowls. As her passion for pottery evolved she became more interested in the sculptural aspect of clay while discovering the Raku process of firing. “Working with clay brings an undeniable bond to the earth, achieving great pleasure from the technique of alternative firings and connecting a natural and volatile process. Raku teaches the ability to embrace the results with a love for the element of surprise after every firing” she states.

Susan Bordas found herself falling in love with clay while traveling in the southwest collecting Native American clay art. She creates pieces that balance realistic and invented imagery with the structural textures coming from conversations with the clay. While using a variety of clay bodies the forms flow from organic to whimsical translating human emotions with an appreciation of transformations in life. Susan says “objects of art have the power to awaken our inner spirits and rekindle our spiritual being. I hope in viewing my work it speaks to you of the spirituality of the connection between human hands and the earth”.

Marsha Christo has evolved as a painter, printmaker and textile artist through a combination of mixed media, which encompasses both paper and cloth. “Like life, my work is similar to the ebb and flow of the tide, as it is forever changing, yet bonds together through process and material” she says. Impacted by tropical light, Christo a native New Englander has embraced this shift over the last twenty years, as it has clarified, “my jubilance for pattern, color and line, which pulsates as the catalyst in all that I do.”

Lake Worth Belongs to ARTISTS!

Well, if I had to pick a weekend to spend on Lake Avenue, it would be this weekend! Beginning this Friday (the 19th), Lake Worth is definately the place to be if you love good food, great shopping and amazing ART! CGMS Gallery artists Karen Winchild, Marcia DiSylvester, and Debra Gower will be featured at this Friday's Gallery opening. Karen creates amazing works in ceramic (her gigantic seashells are breath-taking), Marica creates gorgeous ceramic teapots and vessels incorporating natural elements and vibrant colors, and Debra designs beautiful work in stained glass.

Come by from 6:00 - 9:00 PM to have a glass of wine and meet these talented artists.

Now, that's just the first on the list of events this weekend. Lake Avenue will transform into a stretch of concrete canvas during the annual Street Painting Festival. You don't want to miss this! Saturday and Sunday artists from around the world will gather to cover Lake Avenue with images rendered in chalk. From 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM you can watch artists work "live" in the street. There will be food and music on the Avenue, so please come by to see this fantastic, temporary art event. Fun for the entire family--stop by the Gallery to say hello while you're there!

Whew! As it that isn't enough, on Sunday evening (the 21st) several gallery artists will be represented at "Wild Things", a wildlife/nature inspired art show benefiting the Rare Species Conservatory Foundation. This show will be held in Loxahatchee at a private studio and will be a great night of art and wildlife. Special furry and feathered friends from Busch Wildlife Sanctuary will be on hand to meet guests, and New York Times best selling author Tami Hoag will be joining the fun. Thanks to all who braved the unseasonably cold weather to visit the Gallery on Friday the 8th for our opening featuring CGMS Gallery artists Gail Pasternack, Mary Ellen Dohrs, Sally Siegel, and Karyl Karpinos. A great night, but a bit cold for us sun loving Floridians!!

Now that the cold snap is on it's way out, Lake Avenue is the perfect place to stroll, visiting the wonderful shops and restaurants, while soaking up the SUN! The "snowbirds" are arriving, so be sure to bring all your seasonal friends to the Gallery to see what's new.

Also in the news, CGMS Gallery artist John McCoy is on the move. For the past 32 years John has been a part of FAU faculty and has been a driving force in the Florida ceramics scene. John is retiring from FAU, but certainly not from the kiln. The Ritter Art Gallery, located on the FAU campus, is featuring John's work in a dedicated show titled, "John McCoy and Friends". The show opens Friday, January 22nd and runs through Friday, March 5th. Don't miss it!

The Florida Division of Cultural Affairs has announced the start of the Visual Arts Fellowship Traveling Exhibition to fine art centers and museums. The exhibition will highlight the diverse range of work and talent of the nineteen recipients of the Florida Visual Artist Fellowship Award 2009. The "Champion Tree Triptych" by CGMS Gallery artists Gael and Howard Silverblatt will be part of the two year traveling exhibition. The first venue will be the Mattie Kelly Fine & Performing Arts Center Galleries at the Northwest Florida State College. The Lowe Museum of Art, Mennello Museum, Polk Museum of Art, and the Brogan Museum are all interested in hosting the exhibition.

Mary Ellen Dohrs is one of CGMS Gallery's most prolific sculptors. Her work is varied and detailed, from action-packed sports forms (including basketball players and Sumo wrestling!) to works inspired by nature, full of amazing detail and emotion. Here are two of her newest works, a whimsical, smiling, oversized snail and a lovely family group of huskey dogs. Remember the old Expose Yourself to Art poster?

Well, a group of local artists have taken that a step further. They’re exposing themselves for their art, Calendar Girls-style.

Twelve artists from Lake Worth’s Clay Glass Metal Stone co-op gallery have posed nude for a 2010 calendar with, or next to, their art. The calendar, says photographer Durga Garcia, a curator at the new Palm Beach Photographic Center in downtown West Palm Beach, is supposed to “get the word out” about relatively unknown artists.

Miss December is Sally Siegel, a glass artist from Jupiter who looks great at 82. Patricia Peters is a shapely sculptor whose body mirrors those of her bronze work, and she is Miss May. And West Palm’s Betty Wilson, also a glass artist, is Miss July as a siren in the drink with her art pieces.

There are dudes, too, and one couple. “No one is really a professional model, but they all are beautiful people,” Garcia said. Garcia made sure to cover the men and women just so. We’re all artists,” Garcia said, “so no one is really that self conscious. They’re covered in the pictures but we all got naked at some point. The only one who walked away is a man who is also a professor at Florida Atlantic University. Everything else went well and now other artists want in for next year.”

Garcia says 1,000 calendars were printed. They’re for sale at the gallery, on Lake Avenue.

Even though we haven't carved the turkey yet, and we still have left-over Halloween candy, it is never too early to begin shopping for the Holidays. Two CGMS Gallery artists had a very exciting weekend recently. Gael and Howard Silverblatt, makers of fine gold cloisonne jewelry and small objects, won the $5,000 Best of Show Award at the 46th Annual Art Harvest Festival in Dunedin held Nov. 7-8. Over 250 artists were chosen to exhibit their art work and vie for the $27,500 in award money this year. The Judges were R. Andrew Maass, former Director of the Tampa Museum of Art, and Mark Ormond, current Curator of Exhibitions at the Ringling College Galleries at the Ringling College of Art & Design.
